Highway accident forces detour through Plainville

State police said that a truck driver, who admitted to falling asleep, flipped his tractor-trailer at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 84. The crash caused the closing of the eastbound lanes and traffic was rerouted off exit 34 to Crooked Street, then back onto the highway. Traffic was delayed at rush hour although a lane was reopened by 8 a.m.

Plainville Police Sgt. Charles Smedick said Plainville officers assisted with the traffic detour on Crooked Street during the night.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying frozen foods, traveled across three lanes of the highway and toppled over on its side in the far lane. The driver, who was injured, was taken by ambulance to a hospital. His condition is not known.

Police said that at first they were concerned about a fuel leak but that area was sanded. The truck was moved from the left to the right lane with the plan to remove it up an exit ramp and eventually placed upright.
